SAN JUAN, Puerto Rico (June 25, 2024) - Triple-S Management Corporation, a leading health care company in Puerto Rico, announced today the launch of Fundación por el Futuro de la Salud (The Future of Health Foundation), a nonprofit organization dedicated to strengthening the island’s health care system and addressing critical shortages in specialties. The organization’s mission is to support the development of local talent and provide resources to address the shortage of health care professionals in Puerto Rico.

With an initial investment of $5 million from Triple-S over three years, Fundación por el Futuro de la Salud will focus on creating additional medical residencies to address shortages in critical specialties. Operating independently from Triple-S, the foundation will collaborate with local medical schools and partners such as Orlando Health and AON Group to identify comprehensive health care solutions for the island's needs. The residency program is expected to start in 2025, with an independent board and executive director to be appointed by the fourth quarter of this year.

"At Triple-S, we believe a strong health care system is the backbone of a thriving community. Our commitment to improving health care in Puerto Rico is not just a business strategy, it's a moral imperative," said Thurman Justice, president and CEO of Triple-S. “We invite all business leaders to join us in this mission to ensure that every citizen has access to quality health care. Together, we can create a healthier, more prosperous future for Puerto Rico."

José Novoa, chief medical officer of Triple-S, announced plans to tackle Puerto Rico’s critical healthcare shortages. The Fundación por el Futuro de la Salud will collaborate with academic and medical communities to identify and address the most pressing specialty gaps. Selected residents will commit to practicing in underserved areas, boosting local talent and improving access to quality care.

Specialties experiencing shortages include adult and pediatric cardiovascular thoracic surgery, pediatrics, pulmonary disease, orthopedic surgery, dermatology, neurology, urology, psychiatry, general surgery, and endocrinology, among others.

Celebrating its 65th anniversary, Triple-S has a long history of commitment to the community and has been a leading voice in Puerto Rico’s health care industry. The launch of Fundación por el Futuro de la Salud is a testament to the company’s continued dedication to improving healthcare in Puerto Rico.
